Lady Wolves advance

Monterey's Lady Wolves took the first step into returning to the Class B state tournament in Sulphur by defeating Negreet 10-0 in a first round playoff game at Monterey Monday.

Ellen Bairnsfather, playing possibly in her final home game, held Negreet to three hits, striking out nine.

"The girls were very focused," said Monterey head coach Hazel Brallier. "We hit the ball well, had good pitching and played good defense."

The win was a bit of revenge for Monterey, which lost to Negreet in a first round girls basketball playoff contest in February.

The Lady Wolves, ranked No. 9 in the Class B power ratings, will now face the winner of the Oak Hill-Doyline game that was played Tuesday night.

Oak Hill, the defending state champion, is ranked No. 8.

If Oak Hill defeated Doyline, Monterey will travel to Oak Hill for the second round game. If Doyline (seeded No. 25) was the winner, the Lady Wolves would host the second round contest.

Monterey defeated Oak Hill 3-0 in Oak Hill during the regular season, but lost 3-2 to the Lady Rams in Monterey.

"We beat them last year when they won State," Brallier said. "We know each other very well and know what to expect. The girls should be focused for this one."

Monday night, Negreet, seeded No. 25, had a runner reach first on a walk in the first inning, but Lady Wolf catcher Kennedy Poole threw her out attempting to steal second base.

The next hitter lined a base hit up the middle, that would have scored a runner from second.

Bairnsfather led off Monterey's offense with a sharp base hit to left field.

Bairnsfather stole second base and scored on a base hit by Paige Bryan up the middle.

Monterey added two runs in the second inning as Kennedy Poole singled, Ashley Blake reached on an error and Baler Smith singled.

In the third inning, Bryan and Karlee Woodruff reached on errors, Ashley Willson doubled and Jodie Duncan doubled.

The Lady Wolves scored their final two runs in the sixth as Bailey New singled, Woodruff reached on an error walked, Duncan and Blake singled and Bairnsfather singled.
