Federal jury rules in favor of sheriff, against Whittington
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
A federal grand jury in Alexandria has ruled against Jim Whittington and for Concordia Parish Sheriff Randy Maxwell during civil court proceedings today.

The jury issued its verdict at 3:50 p.m. after deliberating for one hour and 10 minutes.

Whittington had filed suit against Maxwell alleging that he was maliciously arrested and prosecuted in Concordia Parish in violation of his civil rights.

Whittington sought compensatory and punitive damages as well as attorney's fees.

Whittington alleged that Maxwell had harassed him since the late 1990s and claimed that Maxwell and others carried out a political vendetta against him after Whittington ran an aggressive campaign for sheriff against Maxwell in 2003.
