The conflicted elitists
In the 1970 war film Tora! Tora! Tora!, Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto reflected upon the surprise attack of the U.S. Navy at Pearl Harbor, saying, "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."
We could draw a comparison, though under far less serious of circumstances, to the LSU community's reaction – albeit as slow as molasses – to the proposed merger of Louisiana State University at Shreveport with Louisiana Tech University in Ruston.
That Rep. Jim Fannin decided earlier this week to all but abandon his bill that calls for the merger was proof the LSU community still has some stroke in the Legislature, but it is in need of repair. Fannin bailed once it became clear that LSU's lobbying efforts late last week and again on Monday shut down any chance of the merger being approved in the House of Representatives in this year's regular legislative session.
