Story Archives: Cooley back in Vidalia

Cooley back in Vidalia
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Bernie Cooley has been named head football coach of the Vidalia Junior High football team.

"I'm excited to get back into coaching and I'm excited to be coming back home," Cooley said.

Cooley has been out of coaching for a year-and-a-half after serving as head football and baseball coach at Jena High between starting a football program at Pine Prairie.

Cooley has been working for an oilfield company in Jena.

"My wife (Shannon) told me she knew it would only be a matter of time before I was back into coaching," Cooley said.

Cooley, who will be teaching eighth grade reading, said he has missed "the whole nine yards" when it comes to coaching.

"I missed the competition, the excitement that comes with the game and eery aspect," he said.

Cooley said he will talk to Vidalia High School head football coach Gary Paul Parnham about also helping with the high school team.

"I've never coached at a junior high, so it will be a little different from that aspect," Cooley said. "The main focus will be on fundamentals. Once you have the fundamentals down, you can run any type of system you want."

Cooley said he has the football schedule halfway completed.

"I'm ready to get down there and get started," he said.
