Legislature commits $5 million for Vidalia port The Louisiana Legislature committed $5 million to the Vidalia slackwater port project during the session that ended on Monday.
"This legislation makes the port a reality," Mayor Hyram Copeland said Tuesday.
He also announced that the town had hired Wyly Gilfoil, who is Lake Providence port director, as a consultant for the Vidalia port: "He's well qualified and will be a great service to us."
Copeland said the port project will cost about $17 million.
He said the Legislature approved $1 million in Priority 2 funding, which can be provided once approved by the State Bond Commission, and $4 million in Priority 5, which is a commitment to future funding.
"The Vidalia port was my super priority for this session," said Sen. Neil Riser of Columbia, chairman of the Senate Revenue & Fiscal Affairs Committee. "I know that this port is truly going to make a great regional impact. It's a work in progress and now we're waiting for federal dollars to match up."
He added that Gov. Bobby Jindal "has acknowledged that the Vidalia port is a priority."
In the House, Sen. Andy Anders of Clayton helped push the funding through committee and the floor.
"This a good step for Vidalia, the parish and the region," Anders said. "This port is important."For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
