Magnet school preparations continue The upcoming 2012-13 fifth grade class of the Concordia Parish Magnet Program will be the first graduating class for the new school, which opens in August at the former Ridgecrest Elementary campus.
The program initially will be kindergarten through fifth grade, and will grow with the students eventually becoming a K-12 program.
"Magnet programs are programs which create exciting learning experiences that promote student achievement by offering a specific instructional focus," Concordia Parish School Board interim Superintendent Paul Nelson told the Vidalia Lions Club on June 6. "Many of them focus on math, science, technology, music, or the arts. They generally draw students from throughout a school district rather than just one specific attendance zone. The Concordia Parish Magnet Program for Math, Science, and Technology will focus on math, science, and technology.
The K-8 program will focus on math, science, and technology, while the 9-12 program will have a health sciences focus. There will be 20 students per grade level.
Students will be selected through a lottery process and right now the costs are the same as students pay at other public schools in the parish. For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
