Story Archives: Election eyed for Monterey fire protection

Election eyed for Monterey fire protection
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Concordia Parish Police Jury will decide in two weeks whether to call an election later this year for the Monterey Fire Protection District No. 1.

District Fire Chief Jim Graves said he wants voters to consider an annual $50 parcel fee to help fund improvements to the fire department.

"Our rating has dropped, meaning that our insurance rates are lower and now we need to make some improvements to maintain that rating," Graves said.

Louisiana Commissioner of Insurance Donelon announced earlier this year that Monterey's fire protection grading was being lowered from a Class 7 to Class 5.

The Jury has slated the public hearing for June 25.

"This is not a property tax we're looking at," Graves said. "Anybody who owns property, whether they have Homestead Exemption or not, will pay a $50 parcel fee annually if this goes through. No one will pay this fee multiple times no matter how much property they have."

He said "people from out of town who owns camps in the area will also pay the annual parcel fee."
