City park, property sale viewed at Vidalia meeting Residents voiced suggestions for the third phase of the Dr. William T. Polk City Park during a public hearing at the Vidalia Town Council's monthly meeting Tuesday night.
Nearing completion, the first phase of the park area includes basketball courts, restrooms and showers within a tennis pavilion. Funding for phase two of the project was initially sought in early spring which includes a fishing pond with bridges and piers, a spray park and a beach volleyball area.
Grant Coordinator Teresa Dennis said up to $350,000 in grant funds are available annually with the city required to match funding.
She said the next phase will include a children's playground but wanted to know what the public envisioned. Initial ideas include a gazebo, bathrooms, bike trail, horseshoe pits, shuffleboard courts, disc golf course, bocce ball an a community center.
"Basically this is just a proposal, depending on the cost of construction will determine how we will budget it out," she said.
Suggestions from residents included a swimming pool, a skate park, and a track and field area.
"We have not considered a swimming pool, but spray parks are the direction cities are going because the kids seem to enjoy it and there is less liability," said Dennis. She also added that the planned pond will be an additional water feature. For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
