Fights reported Tuesday night at Wilkinson County Correctional Facility The Concordia Parish Special Response Team (SRT) was placed on standby Tuesday night following a breakout of fights between inmates at the Wilkinson County Correctional Facility in Woodville, Miss.
In a statement late morning Wednesday, a facility spokesman indicated that the prison was on lockdown status, "meaning all inmates are restricted to their cells, following multiple inmate fights at the facility last night."
Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office Capt. David Hedrick said Tim Houghton of AMR (American Medical Response), a member of the Concordia SRT, reported that five of its ambulances were dispatched to the prison Tuesday night.
"About an hour after we were placed on standby we were told that everything had been taken care of," Hedrick said.
"At approximately 8:45 p.m. local time, facility staff responded to simultaneous incidents of inmates fighting with one another in multiple housing areas," according to the prison statement provided by Public Information Officer Angela Smith. "Staff responded immediately to quickly contain and quell the disturbance. Within an hour the incident was resolved, with all inmates secured in their housing areas.
"Per standard protocol, the facility's trained emergency response team was activated and is on-site. Officials with the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) were notified and have been on-site at the facility. At no time was public safety at risk as facility staff responded quickly to contain and resolve the incident.
"Three inmates were transported off-site to area hospitals for treatment of injuries, of which two have already been returned to the facility. Another 20 inmates were treated on-site by facility medical staff for various, non-life threatening injuries. There were no injuries to staff."
The 1,000-bed Wilkinson County Correctional Facility houses male Mississippi state inmates and is operated by Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) in partnership with MDOC.
A prison riot in late May at the CCA's Adams County Correctional Center resulted in the death of a 24-year-old officer, Catlin Carithers. Others were taken hostage before later being released. |
