Two die in Lake St. John boating mishap

Two men were killed this weekend when the bass boat in which they were riding crashed into a pier on Lake St. John.

Authorities identified the men as Bruce Pickle, 50, of Lake St. John and Larry Allen, 52, of Pearl, Miss. They were cousins.

Pickle was a physical education teacher and coach at Vidalia Junior High.

"He taught math for about six or seven years and more recently has been teaching PE," said VJH Principal Whest Shriley. "You'd never meet a nicer guy. He was super with the kids and very competitive."

Search and rescue teams with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries and the Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office, with assistance from other agencies and companies, recovered the bodies of both men.

The accident occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday, June 16.

"We know that they had been out there fishing that day and that night," according to CPSO Capt. David Hedrick.

The body of Pickle, who was identified as the driver, was found in the water by onlookers who witnessed the crash. Officials said he was ejected from the boat on impact. Attempts to resuscitate Pickle were not successful.
