McGlothin looks back on third term
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Mayor Glen McGlothin said it hit him back in April that he was no longer part of the political scene in Ferriday.

"For the first time in 24 years, my name was not on the ballot," McGlothin said, who has served three terms as mayor. "I know what it feels like to be a winner and a loser. I hope I was gracious every time."

McGlothin's current term expires at the end of this month. He also served as mayor from 1988 to 1996 and again in 2000 to 2004.

Gene Allen, who was elected to the mayor's post this spring, begins his second term as mayor July 1.

"Every day is going to be a challenge in Ferriday," McGlothin said. "We don't have the big corporations, the big taxpayers, a river or an interstate. Walmart crippled us when they came and then crippled us when they left. We had Otasco and Western Auto and other stores like that when Walmart came here and then when they left we lost that tax base.

"Don't give up on Ferriday. It's not about the mayor, it's about survival. Don't be part of the problem, be part of the solution."

The approval and financing by USDA of the soon-to-be built water plant is a highlight of McGlothin's present term.
