Story Archives: Parishwide fire ban in effect

Parishwide fire ban in effect
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Concordia Parish Police Jury announced Monday that a fire ban was now in place parishwide due to dry conditions.

"That means that no one can set fires other than those that are controlled burns," Police Jury President Melvin Ferrington said. "There can be no burning of brush piles unless it's a control burn with fire district involvement."

He said the ban would not effect the use of fireworks over the holiday.

Concordia Parish Fire District No. 2 Chief Nolan Cothern said anyone handling fireworks "should have a garden hose available and keep the 911 number handy. Parents or guardians should oversee the use of fireworks."

Cothern said that conditions are not quite as dry as last year.

"We've had a couple of spot showers but it's still dry," he said. "We've had a few grass fires on the levee and some trash fires in people's yards that got out of hand."
