Frank to revisit 1962 Fatherland dig during Grand Village talk

The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians will present an illustrated talk by Joseph V. "Smokye" Frank entitled "The 1962 Archaeological Investigations at the Fatherland Site (The Grand Village of the Natchez)" in the museum auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 12.

Admission is free and seating is limited.

Fifty years ago this summer, Frank, a Natchez native, participated in the archaeological dig at the Grand Village led by Robert S. Neitzel, then chief museum curator for the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. The excavation provided the material for Neitzel's landmark 1965 report, "Archaeology of the Fatherland Site: The Grand Village of the Natchez," published by the American Museum of Natural History.

Neitzel's team uncovered the remains of the Natchez mounds and sacred structures described in numerous colonial narratives, which eventually resulted in the state's acquisition and development of the National Historic Landmark property.
