Pool stage viewed for Old River

The Concordia Parish Police Jury met with officials of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District Monday night to discuss the establishment of a pool stage for Old River at Vidalia to improve fishing.

The idea was first studied during the mid-1980s by the Old River Advisory Committee, which was appointed by the Jury. The matter was viewed again in 2008 when the Jury requested a feasibility study for the construction of a weir at the mouth of Old River at Marengo Bend, upstream from the Mississippi River Bridge, about a half mile north of Vidalia Dock & Storage.

Police juror Randy Temple said a quarter-mile long chute (canal) connects Old River to the Mississippi and is used by commercial fisherman and the general public to access both water bodies by boat. The existing weir at the chute's connection to Old River was replaced in 2010 with a temporary 60-inch culvert and road by the Corps as part of work to raise the mainline Mississippi River levee.

During last year's flood the culvert "slowed the fall of Old River, which naturally drops as the level of the Mississippi does," Temple said. "But during that interval, sports fishermen said that slower fall made fishing conditions better."

However, the Corps' Kent Parish said Monday the road and culvert will be removed as part of the levee project "because we need the dirt."
