Gators win district

The Ferriday Gators celebrated July 4th with a bang in Rayville.

The Gators came through the loser's bracket to defeat Winnsboro twice to win the Louisiana Dixie Debs District 5 championship.

"We don't know any other way but to come through the loser's bracket," said Ferriday coach Rut Horne. "It seems our backs have to be against the wall."

Both teams advance to the state tournament in Ponchatula beginning July 14.

The Gators lost to Winnsboro 2-0 to fall into the loser's bracket, but made their way back to the finals, defeating Winnsboro 4-2 in the first game, forcing a second game. The Gators won the second game, 2-0.

"We had to play more small ball the last two games," Horne said. "They have an outstanding pitcher (Katie Johnson)."

Mollie Devening was the winning pitcher in the first game, while Ginney Daggett blanked Winnsboro in the second game by a 2-0 score.

"We've got three proven pitches in Mollie Devening, Ginny Daggett and Ellen Bairnsfather," Horne said. "If we can get a few innings out of a couple of others, we should be OK."

The winner of the state tournament will advance to the World Series, which will be held in Powhatan, Va., this year.
