Nelson monitoring enrollment, rising costs

Keeping an eye on rising insurance and retirement costs as well as enrollment figures are among the many tasks Concordia's new school superintendent will be monitoring in the days ahead.

Dr. Paul Nelson, 45, Supervisor of Academic Affairs, was named superintendent of parish schools Thursday night on a unanimous 9-0 vote.

He has served as acting superintendent since the retirement of Loretta Blankenstein in June, and says he's glad the hiring process is over and looks forward to the task at hand.

"I'm pretty excited about the job and I want to thank the board for their vote of support," he said. "We have a lot of challenges ahead, including the transition to Common Core and the Compass system for teacher evaluation."

The Compass system involves accountability in which student growth accounts for 50 percent of all teacher evaluations.

Nelson said the school district employs 600, including about 300 teachers. He said 3,900 students attend the parish's 11 different schools.

One school -- the newly-established magnet school at Ridgecrest -- was officially named by the board Thursday night as the Concordia Parish Academy of Math, Science & Technology.
