Watkins returning to Ferriday

K.G. Watkins is returning to Ferriday.

Watkins, who served as head boys basketball coach in 2007-08 and has also served as assistant football and assistant girls basketball coach, was named head boys basketball coach at Ferriday High.

James Davis, who is the assistant principal at Ferriday High, took over as head boys basketball coach for Glenn Henderson in the middle of the 2009 season.

Watkins, who has spent the past five years as head boys basketball coach at Block High, guided the Trojans to the state championship game in Class 2A where the Trojans fell to St. Thomas Aquinas, after eliminating Lakeside in the semifinals at the Top 28 Tournament in Lafayette.

"I enjoyed my time at Block, but this is a great opportunity," Watkins said. "The kids I had here before had such great attitudes and a desire to win. I'm hoping that will be the same way this year and in the future."

Watkins will also assist first-year coach Cleothis Cummings in football. Watkins was an assistant football coach to James McFarland and Freddie Harrison at Ferriday.

"It's not unfamiliar territory," Watkins said.

Watkins got a chance to see Ferriday's boys basketball team when they played Block. Ferriday

"We want to bring that winning tradition back," Watkins said. "We want to get the black and gold back to where it needs to be. I was impressed with the kids on last year's squad. I just need to get to know them and they need to get to know me. If they can give me 100 percent, we'll have a good experience."

Watkins led Ferriday to a 26-8 season in 2007-08, going unbeaten in District 2-2A and an impressive 7-1 as a visiting team.
