Local NAACP president booked in Vidalia; two police officers on non-paid leave
Former Ferriday mayoral candidate and local NAACP president the Rev. Justin Conner was charged with careless operation and no seat belt early Saturday morning in Vidalia.
Two Vidalia policemen were placed on leave afterward.
A Vidalia police report says that the car Conner was driving struck the foundation of a house under construction in a new subdivision on Alabama Street.
The accident occurred at approximately 1:48 a.m. The house belongs to Adam and Shannon Probst.
Conner was not given a breathalyzer test at the scene. He reportedly told officers he had fallen asleep.
Vidalia Police Chief Arthur Lewis said a sergeant who worked the incident and a supervisor have been placed on non-paid administrative leave while an investigation is ongoing.
"We're trying to get to the bottom of it and why they neglected to use a breathalyzer," Lewis said. "If they had, it would have protected all parties involved and we would have had the truth and that's what we are looking for."
The 40-year-old Conner, who serves as president of the Concordia-Catahoula NAACP, refused medical treatment at the scene.
