A recall petition has been filed with the Louisiana Secretary of State against Vidalia Police Chief Arthur Lewis.

According to records at the Secretary of State's Office, the petition was hand delivered to state officials in Baton Rouge on July 17.

Seeking the recall are Anthony Scott Cupit, 1111 Palm Street, Vidalia, and Martha Maxine Lashute, 1226 Apple St., Vidalia. Cupit was listed as chairman of the recall and Lushute as vice-chairman.

The petitioners request that an election be held for the purpose of recalling Lewis.

One-third of the registered voters in Vidalia will have to sign the petition for a recall election to be held.

The recall petition will require the handwritten signature of each voter. The petition form notes: "A person who is unable to write must affix his mark, and the person circulating the petition shall affix the name of the incapacitated person in the presence of two witnesses who must also date and sign their name as witnesses to his mark.)

The form also requires the signer to provide date of birth, date of signature, district and precinct of registration, residence address, the signature of a witness and the date the signature was witnessed and obtained.
