Lewis moving forward despite recall

Vidalia Police Chief Arthur Lewis says he's going to continue doing the job "the people elected to me to do," despite a recall petition seeking to remove him from office.

According to records at the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office, documents seeking a recall against Lewis were hand delivered to state officials in Baton Rouge on July 17.

Seeking the recall are Anthony Scott Cupit, 1111 Palm Street, Vidalia, and Martha Maxine Lashute, 1226 Apple St., Vidalia. Cupit was listed as chairman of the recall and Lushute as vice-chairman.

"I'm just going to continue to do the job the people elected me to do," Lewis said. "Some people are not going to be happy with people who enforce the law. But the Lord is here to stay and I will continue to be honest and fair and pray everything will be okay.

"I have been abiding by the law and I am going to be fair and honest to all the people."

One-third of the registered voters in Vidalia will have to sign the petition for a recall election to be held.
