Remembering 'The Drive' n the top football games played in Concordia Parish.
It will be forever known as "The Drive." But instead of John Elway in 1986, it was Ferriday High quarterback Tyrrence Taylor supplying the magic in a 2002 Class 2A second round playoff game.
After Homer took a 7-6 lead over Ferriday with 3:56 remaining in the game, Ferriday took over on its own 35-yard line and Taylor took over the game.
The senior signal-caller carried the ball eight times for 53 yards, going the final yard with 13 seconds remaining to give the Trojans a 14-7 win over the Pelicans.
"I told Tyrrence if we don't get in, it's over for us," said Ferriday coach James McFarland. "I was thinking of the best plays we had run up to that point and the quarterback draw was one of them. Brennan Smith hurt his ankle the week before and he was still hobbling a bit, but there was no reason to hold back and he gave us all he could. I put (lineman) Ken Hollins at fullback as a lead blocker. We ran that lead draw about four times on the final drive. It was very effective."
Taylor completed a 13-yard pas to Chris Sheppard on fourth-and-12 in the final drive to the Pelican 43 with 1:59 remaining.
Ferriday led 6-0 at halftime as Taylor, who rushed for 137 yards on 18 carries, scored on a 27-yard run in the first period.
Homer scored with four minutes remaining on a Broderick Ramsey 14-yard touchdown catch from Jarvis Willis. |
