Students return to school Friday

Concordia Parish students return to classes on Friday as the 2012-2013 school year begins.

Supt. Paul Nelson said enrollment will likely total from 3,800 to 3,900.

"We should be close to where we were last school year in numbers," he said.

He said there are 285 teachers in the parish and 11 principals.

"Teachers will report Tuesday for staff development at their school sites," he said, "and that will continue at the Riverfront convention center in Vidalia on Wednesday and Thursday. The first day of school will be Friday and we'll dismiss at 12:30 p.m."

Nelson said students at Ferriday Lower, Ferriday Upper and Ferriday Junior High will once again be offered School Choice.

"This is part of the federal No Child is Left Behind Program that requires school systems to offer students that fall into certain categories the opportunity to attend other schools in the parish," Nelson said.

The program is offered specifically to students who attend schools that score below 75 on school performance.

"In Louisiana the threshold is now 75, rather than the previous threshold of 65," Nelson said. "A score below 75 is considered an 'F'."
