Story Archives: Record corn harvest underway

Record corn harvest underway
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Although a drought is causing crop failures throughout much of the country, Concordia farmers may be headed for a record corn harvest thanks to whopping yields and soaring market prices.

Half of the estimated 60,000-acre corn crop has been harvested.

Kevin Case, Executive Director of the Concordia Parish Farm Service Agency, said Tuesday one farmer's dryland corn crop in the Horseshoe Lake area has produced 232 bushels per acre.

"At $7 per bushel that's a gross of $1,624 per acre," Case said. "That's unheard of and this is just one example."

Case said most of the dryland corn crop is yielding an average of 170-plus bushels per acre, while irrigated land is yielding 200-bushels plus.

"No question, we're looking at an all time record year, a record income," Case said. "Farmers and the land owners who rent farm land are on the way to making more in one year than they would have in three years combined a decade ago."

Case said the cost of producing corn is about $300 per acre, including fertilizer, seed and chemical costs.

"Not only is the farmer doing well but on rented land, the landowner at 20 percent rent is doing well, too," Case said. "Before this, a high cash rent was $100 per acre."
