Cupit wins Panola title George Cupit captured his first Panola Woods Country Club Men's Championship, defeating Richard Criswell on the second playoff hole Sunday at Panola.
"I'm very excited,"said Cupit, whose top finish before was third in the championship flight. "Ten years ago I thought I might have had a chance, but the older you get the less you feel your chances are,"
It was the second playoff for Criswell in three years. Criswell defeated 13-time champion Mitch Ashmore in 2011 in a playoff for his fifth Panola title.
Cupit and Criswell both finished at 152.
Cupit shot a 78 over the first 18 holes and trailed six golfers, including Hinson who led the pack with a 73.
Cupit, who played linebacker at LSU,
shot a 74 over the final 18 holes Sunday, Criswell fired a 79.
Criswell is 2-2 on playoff holes.
"i was happy to get to the playoff after having a bad day (Sunday)," Criswell said. "Just after making my birdie on 18, Craig Jackson walked up to me and said I think you just shot yourself into a playoff. Then as I walked into the clubhouse everyone was saying you and George Cupit are in a playoff and suddenly my bad day seem be turning around a little. I asked where George was so we could get the playoff started and they said he had to go back to the car his clubs and shoes because he didn't believe it either.
Both golfers parred the first playoff hole.
"The playoff was a lot of fun," Criswell said. "George and I were just standing on the tee box on hole No. 1 all smiles, both of us just happy to be there. On hole No. 2 the par 5 is where my golf game for the day returned and I hit a bad tee shot leaving me under a tree and having to lay up for my third shot into the green. However I didn't clear my shot back into the fairway leaving me under another tree. I was going to have to hit a punch shot over water onto a hard green, but I knew I had to clear the water and leave myself a chance at making par. George had laid up to a perfect position and was in great shape to make birdie or par. Well, I chunk it into the water basically killing any chance of winning the playoff. I wasn't surprised that I had hit such a bad shot in that moment, because I had done it all day when I seemed to have needed or wanted to hit a good shot. That shot was the way my golf game had been all day. I was very happy that George got his chance and won the Club Championship. George is a great guy and will be a great Club Champion for the rest of the year. He is very deserving of winning the tournament."
Cupit said he was actually in his flip-flops in the clubhouse. Hinson seemed to have the tournament sewed up, but two out-of-bound shots led to a nine on the final hole.
"That's a shame because he's one of the better golfers out here," Cupit said. "I was in the clubhouse and Wayne Miley was riding around and told us we were probably out of it. I feel for Brian because I've been there. After shooting a 78 on the first day and seeing those low scores, I was just playing Sunday to basically try to win the Senior Championship. I was very nervous at the first playoff hole, but Richard was gracious and helped me calm down. This is something I never thought would happen. It's something I will never forget."
Hinson and Senior Champion Larry Wagoner tied for third place at 154.
Last year's champion Jerry Johns, Darrell Reid and Shane Young came in at 155. Keith Dallalio fired a 158, while Jeremy Wood and Pat Hinson came in at 159. Cliff McGlothin shot a 160.
Johnny Goodwin and Eddie Waltman tied for top honors in the first flight with 159s.
Ashmore placed third at 161.
Pat Smith led the second flight with a 175. Mike Smith was second at 176, while Michael Tuminello was third at 178.
Winning the third flight was Duke Knapp with a 184. Aaron Maroon was second at 188, while Chad Murray was third at 202.
Wayne Miley captured the Super Senior flight at 160, followed by Babe Huff at 161 and Coye Pace and Charles Webb at 163.
Panola will host the Ryder Cup on August 18 as the Ferriday team will take on LaSalle Parish, looking for revenge from last year.
After falling to LaSalle Country Club two years ago before bringing the cup to Panola Woods last year, the Panola Woods Country Club team fell to the team from Jena 27 1/2 to 12 1/2. |
