Vidalia approves boat ramp; views roadblock

At Tuesday's night meeting of the Vidalia Town Council, the board agreed to begin the process to rent the former boat ramp, south of the newly constructed ramp on the Mississippi River to Upriver Boat Supply, LLC .

The company plans to provide the only docking station between Vicksburg and Baton Rouge — a 44-hour travel period for barge traffic. The company would install an anchoring system to provide a crew change site and grocery and supply stocking facility for barge traffic.

"It seems to be a pretty novel idea," said City Attorney Jack McLemore. "The company operates four or five similar facilities up and down the river."

McLemore said there would be no expense to the city. The company will incur all construction costs in the installation of a deadband anchor at the site, which consists of a concrete band and wire harnesses. They will also be renting an existing building on the riverfront owned by Cappy Stahlman.
