Third West Nile case reported in Concordia A third case of West Nile virus infection was reported in Concordia Parish last week by the Louisiana Department of Health & Hospitals (DHH), which also reported 15 new cases statewide and four deaths from the disease.
The new Concordia case is neuro-invasive, DHH reported. Of the two previously reported cases, one is neuro-invasive and the other asymptomatic.
The Concordia Parish Police Jury discussed the issue at its regular meeting Monday night and is looking into a spraying program for the pest.
"We don't have anything in the budget, and I'm not sure what we can do this year," Police Jury President Melvin Ferrington said. "We'll do some spraying if possible. One of the problems is we don't have anyone certified to spray."
He said the Jury would consider adding funding for a mosquito abatement program in next year's budget.
In April 2004, parish voters overwhelming defeated a 4.2-mill, 10-year mosquito abatement tax. Fifty-seven percent of the voters rejected the measure, which failed in 17 of 28 precincts. A total of 1,781 voters opposed the tax, while 1,345 supported the measure.
So far this year, six people have died from the West Nile virus, and DHH has detected 68 cases. More than half – 37– of this year's cases are West Nile neuro-invasive disease, the more serious form of the virus that infects the brain and spinal cord and can cause brain damage or death. This is the highest total of West Nile neuro-invasive infections that have occurred in the state since 2006, according to DHH.For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
