Louisiana 5th Congressional District ranks second in U.S. exports to China

The Fifth Congressional District in Louisiana, which includes Concordia and 21 other parishes in the northeastern and central part of the state, was ranked second in the U.S. in 2011 in exports to China.

Crop production was the number one export nationally, statewide and in the Fifth District.

According to a report just issued by the U.S. China Business Council (USCBC), the Fifth District exported $3.079 billion in goods and products to China last year.

Crop production dominated exports at $2.9 billion, followed by chemicals, $104 million; waste and scrap, $35 million; processed foods, $18 million; and paper products, $17 million.

"It's great news," said Fifth District Congressman Rodney Alexander. "There's a lot of complaining about China, but they're spending $3 billion a year with the Fifth District."

He said much of the crop production includes grain, while adding that agriculture production in the district also includes timber, pecans, peanuts, potatoes, cotton, sugar and other products.

Alexander said the Fifth District "on a row crop basis is the largest district in the nation, which is why our exports are so high."

He said he recently visited Cuba "to see if we can get more of our wood products there."

Washington State's 4th Congressional District was the leading exporter to China at $3.3 billion, while Oregon's 1st Congressional District was ranked third in China exports at $1.5 billion.

Since 2002, exports to China from the Fifth District have risen 965 percent while exports to the rest of the world have jumped 85 percent, USCBC reports.

USCBC is a nonprofit organization of 240 American companies that do business with China.
