West Nile virus detected in mosquito samples

Mosquitoes taken from two of five pool sites in Vidalia have tested positive for the West Nile virus, according to Vidalia Street Department Supt. Lee Staggs.

"We've been doing surveillance for two weeks and turned samples in last Wednesday," Staggs said.

Louisiana continues to see a rise in human West Nile virus infections, with the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals reporting 24 new cases on Friday. No additional deaths from West Nile have occurred, though six people this year have died after contracting the virus.
