One-mill drainage tax proposed The Concordia Parish Police Jury -- based on the recommendation of two committees -- voted unanimously Monday night to call for a parishwide one-mill tax election on Dec. 1 to fund the operation and maintenance of two proposed drainage projects.
The tax is expected to generate $133,000 per year.
Structural designs as well as operation and maintenance funding plans for both the Black River Lake and Brushy Bayou projects must be approved by the Corps of Engineers before the projects can be moved forward.
The Black River Lake Recreational & Water Conservation District and the Concordia Parish Drainage Committee recommended Monday night that the one-mill tax be proposed, instead of a two-mill tax previously considered.
"We believe that the one-mill tax will be enough to provide for the operation and maintenance of the control structures," Jury President Melvin Ferrington said.
According to Bill Beasley, chairman of the parish drainage committee, a person with a $75,000 home would pay no taxes on the millage due to Homestead Exemption, while those with a $100,000 home would pay $2.50 and a $200,000 home, $12.50.
Beasley said Tuesday morning that after talking with officials at the assessor's office, he learned that the cost for landowners will be much lower than quoted at Monday night's meeting. He said the one-mill tax on 100 acres of agriculture land would cost the property owner from $1.86 to $3.47 per year and 100 acres of timberland would cost from 75 cent to $3.87 per year depending on soil type.
"There will be no collection of the millage until the work is done," Beasley said. For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
