Steamboat race topic at Jefferson College Historic Jefferson College will present a free lunch time lecture entitled, "The Great Steamboat Race—the Natchez vs. the Robert E. Lee," on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at noon at Historic Jefferson College in Washington, Miss.
H. Clark Burkett, retired historian with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, will give insight into how this 1,200 mile race up the Mississippi River from New Orleans to St. Louis came about and provide a glimpse into the personalities of the two captains of the boats: Thomas Paul Leathers, the 6 ft.-4 in., 270-pound captain of the Natchez and John W. Cannon, a man almost as big as Leathers, the captain of the Robert E. Lee.
This race took place in 1870 and was followed by thousands in the U.S. and Europe. Bets on the outcome probably amounted close to a million dollars. This lecture will reveal the extremes one captain went to get to the most out of his boat and why all bets were canceled in Europe.
For more information on his upcoming lecture you may contact Historic Jefferson College at 601-442-2901 or e-mail xavier122175@att.net.For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
