Vidalia falls to Delhi Charter

Vidalia High lost more than a football game Friday at Delhi Charter, as Viking quarterback Michael Whitley suffered a sprained left knee and will be out at least two weeks, while running back/linebacker Johnny Anderson broke his ankle and will be out most of the season.

"Those are tough losses, but we just have to have other people step up," said Vidalia coach Gary Paul Parnham.

Vidalia fell to Delhi Charter 28-13, after being pummeled 49-7 in Vidalia last year.

Delhi Charter quarterback Will Zeigler ran for three touchdowns and threw for another to lead the Gators.

Ziegler emerged as the Gators quarterback last season, accounting for more than 1,000 yards of offensive production and 15 total touchdowns.

Zeigler's 24-yard run with 2:25 left in the contest sealed the win.

Zeigler scored on runs of 3 and 1 yard in the first half, but Vidalia led 7-6 early in the second quarter as Whitley's 7-yard run capped an 11-play, 50-yard drive that began after a DCS fumble.

"It's always good to put the points on the board first, especially at home," said Delhi Charter coach Brett Raley. "Vidalia is much improved from last year. Any time you can beat a team in a higher classification it is good. Vidalia played hard."

The Vikings controlled the ball most of the night leading in time of possession 30 minutes to 18 for DCS and running 64 offensive plays to the Gators 40, but Delhi Charter led in total yardage 365 to 200.

The Gators fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half and Whitley capitalized for Vidalia on a 1-yard run to cut the DCS lead to 14-13.

Whitley was hurt on Vidalia's next possession and freshman Jonterris Townsend took over the signal-calling.

The Gators upped their lead on the next possession with a 10-play 79-yard drive when Zeigler connected with receiver Quinn Porter on a 23-yard pass.

Christian Colvin added the conversion run to make the score 22-13 with five minutes left in the third quarin time of possession 30 minutes to 18 for DCS and running 64 offensive plays to the Gators 40, but Delhi Charter led in total yardage 365 to 200.

Kole Stracener caught four passes for 65 yards for Delhi Charter.

"We moved the ball, but just had critical mistakes and penalties when we moved the ball deep into their territory," Parnham said. "There are little things we are not getting done. The kids played hard and are playing much better. We just need a complete game."
