Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland was one of nine mayors named to the executive committee of the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative (MRCTI).

The group held its first organizational meeting last week in St. Louis, Mo., where Copeland served as a moderator for the "Floods & Droughts: Mitigating, Insuring and Developing in Their Path" session.

The conference's theme was, "A River Runs Through Us."

"It was very productive and I received a lot of valuable information to help us in the future," Copeland said.

Copeland was one of 41 mayors of towns and cities along the Mississippi River taking part in the meeting.

"There are 120 communities and they hope to get the majority to join," Copeland said. "I know (Natchez Mayor) Butch Brown is interested in joining the group."
