|Jury seeks solution to overflow|
The Concordia Parish Police Jury voted Monday night to ask the parish engineer to help resolve a problem with a manhole on Victoria Road in Concordia Park that overflows during heavy rains.
Juror Willie Dunbar said the overflow spreads waste in ditches.
"I want it taken care of," Dunbar said told members of the Concordia Sewerage District No. 1 Board in attendance at the Jury's regular meeting.
But George Jolla, district manager, said the manhole "is located at the lowest point of the system. During heavy rains, it's always a problem. The lift station can not keep up and the water is going to come out."
He said the problem would remain until the lift station was upgraded and that the district doesn't have the funds to perform the work.
"It flows waste material into the ditch," Dunbar said. "It smells and that's a health hazard. You need to close that manhole."
Jolla, however, said the manhole "is an integral part of our whole system. We can't do anything about the rain and that's when the problem occurs."
Board member George Ashley said "the whole sewer system is makeshift. We'll have problems until it's all tied together."
