Block gets payback win It was payback time in Donaldsonville Friday night.
And the Block Bears cashed in.
After falling to Donaldsonville 54-0 in their homecoming last year, the Bears got sweep revenge with a 23-18 win over the Tigers.
"We talked about that all week and had signs up," said Block coach Benny Vault. "It was a good win for us. They have a very athletic quarterback and one receiver who is 6-foot-5 and another 6-6."
After not getting a first down in the third quarter, William Cummings finished off an 85-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run.
Donaldsonville took over possession at the 50-yard line with 1:42 to play, as junior quarterback Leandre James marched the Tigers down to the 10-yard line with only nine seconds remaining. Without a timeout, Donaldsonville coach Terence Williams chose to keep the ball in James' hands on a quarterback draw, but he was tackled by several Block defenders at the 5-yard line. The clock expired as the Tigers were trying to line up for one final snap.
"Our guys were hitting the gaps expecting him to pass, but he's a better runner than passer," Vault said. "They stayed at home on the final play and contained him to end the game."
Freshman wingback Raymond Plummer led the Bears' rushing attack with 106 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.
"Raymond did a great job," Vault said. "He started at safety for us last year as an eighth-grader."
William Cummings finished with 77 yards and the game-winning score, while junior wingback Ken Colbert finished with 70 yards and touchdown. Both Cummings and Colbert carried the ball 18 times in the game. |
