Vidalia hosts Jena Before defeating Baker 10-7 in Vidalia Friday, the Vikings had not tasted victory since November 5, 2010 when they beat Jena 40-28 in Vidalia.
Jena returns to Vidalia Friday in the District 2-2A opener for both teams.
Jena has been the surprise of the district, starting out 4-1, including a 37-8 win over Block. The Giants' only loss was a 49-30 setback to Menards.
"Jena has a good football team," said Vidalia coach Gary Paul Parnham. "A lot of their kids who are seniors now played as freshmen under Bernie (Cooley). They have some outstanding backs and are well polished. They have a fullback who is a waterbed. We have to tackle well all night."
Parnham said quarterback Michael Whitley is questionable for Friday. Whitley sprained his knee earlier this season.
Jena is led by junior fullback Chevy Thornton, who has 886 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns out of the double wing.
"We're playing OK, but we still have some work to do," said Jena head coach Jay Roark. "We have a good group of running backs and our offensive line is getting to where we want them to be."
Jena defeated Vidalia 58-20 last year.
"I'm sure they have revenge on their mind," said Roark, who is in his first year at Jena. "Vidalia has been getting better and better each week and now they are excited and hungry. This is the first district game for both teams, so that makes it even more important." |
