Early voting starts Oct. 23
Early voting for the Nov. 6 election begins Tuesday, Oct. 23.
Voters will cast ballots in the Presidential race, Fifth District Congressional race and local races.
Nine constitutional amendments will also be on the ballot as will a proposition on limiting School Board members to three consecutive four-year terms.
Registrar of Voters Golda Ensminger said early voting is slated for Oct. 23-30, with the exception of Sunday, Oct. 28. Early voting hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
She said early voters should bring a current Louisiana driver's license or other state-issued identification card.
Candidates elected without opposition during qualifying in August were Dwayne Sikes as Ridgecrest mayor, Warren Enterkin as a member of the School Board, Gloria Lloyd as Ferriday alderman and Tim Charrier as Justice of the Peace in District 5B.
Charrier, 11988 Hwy. 129, Acme, will fill the unexpired term of the late Lavere Book Jr.
Enterkin will serve the unexpired term of Daryle Price, who resigned the post to become coroner. Enterkin was appointed to Price's District 5A board slot earlier this year.
Sikes stepped down from his alderman post last fall after being appointed as mayor of Ridgecrest until an election could be held. Sikes will fill the unexpired term of Kevin Graham, who resigned last year and was later indicted by a parish Grand Jury for malfeasance, theft and filing or maintaining false public records.
Candidates for the alderman post vacated by Sikes are Cecil "Frank" Gatlin, 101 Grape St., Ridgecrest; Jeff Johnson, 108 Orange St., Ridgecrest; and Bobby Sheppard Sr., 114 Cottonwood Dr., Ridgecrest.
Benja R. Fussell of Lake St. John became the District 1 Justice of the Peace in September after the only other candidate, Justin Conner, who previously held the post, withdrew from the race.
In School Board races, candidates for the District 4B slot are Jeffery Goodman, 319 Crestview, Ferriday; Angela Hayes, 241 Cowan St., Ferriday; and David Turner, 207 Ferriday Dr., Ridgecrest.
The winner will fill the unexpired term of Martha Rabb, who resigned earlier this years. Hayes was appointed to represent the district until the election.
In Ferriday, four of five aldermen are being challenged.
In District A, Robert A. Allen, P.O. Box 200, qualified against incumbent Somer Lance, 110 Crescent Dr.
In District B, Elijah "Stepper" Banks, 727 Tennessee Ave., Ferriday, faces two challengers, including Chris Chatman, 606 Florida Ave., and Allen O. Froust, 718 Tennessee Ave.
In District C, qualifying were incumbent Sandra Gail Pryor, 309 Morning Star Alley; and challenger Felton Dupree, P. O. Box 1642.
District D Alderman Johnnie Brown, 405 Sixth St., faces Marcus "Slim" Martin, 503 Seventh St.
Terms expire June 30, 2016, for the Ferriday aldermen posts, while terms for other local offices on the Nov. 6 ballot will expire December 31, 2014.
In the Presidential race, incumbent President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden (Democrat) are challenged by the Republican ticket of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan and the following: Jill Stein-Cheri Honkla (Green Party), Gary Johnson-James P. Gray (Libertarian), Virgil Goode-James Clymer (Constitution), Ross Anderson-Luis Rodriguez (Justice), Jack Fellure-Tobby Davis (Prohibition), Peta Lindsay/Yaria Oso (Socialism and Liberation), Jerry White-Phyllis Scherrer (Socialist Equality), James Harris-Alyson Kennedy (Socialist Workers) and Sheila Tittle-Matthew Turner (We The People).
