Block advances past Delhi Charter
In a game of few big defensive plays, Block junior Trevor Vault made a huge one.
With 7:30 remaining in the Class A first round playoff contest between the home Bears and Delhi Charter, School the Gators faced fourth-and-two at the Block 32, trailing 35-28.
DCS quarterback Will Zeigler pitched the ball to Christian Colvin on the option, but Vault made a one-on-one open field tackle to stop Colvin for no gain.
Block then marched the ball down the field, with Mario Bowman scoring from 12 yards out with 1:47 remaining to secure a 42-28 win for the Bears.
"Watching them on film I knew they liked to run the option on short yardage," Vault said. "They were not getting anything inside. I knew we needed a big stop at that time."
Block, 9-2, hosts WestminsterAcademy in the second round.
"I didn't expect us to play that bad on defense, that's been our strong point," said Block coach Benny Vault Jr. "But I'm proud of our kids. We're going to get better."
Block looked like it would cruise into the second round easily on its first drive, going 65 yards in four plays to take the early lead.
Trevor Vault passed to Mario Bowman on a 30-yard scoring play with 10:14 remaining. Ken Colbert added the first of six extra point kicks for an early 7-0 lead.
Delhi Charter pulled to within 7-6 as Christian Colvin scored on fourth-and-goal from the Bear 3-yard line. The conversion run failed.
Block answered as Ty'quentin Bell broke loose on a 37-yard run to the Gator 16-yard line. After a penalty, Block freshmen running back Raymond Plummer scored on a 13-yard run.
Plummer twisted his ankle with 3:04 remaining in the second quarter. The freshman back, who came into the game with 538 rushing yards (8.97 per carry) had 33 yards on six carries before leaving the game. He did not return.
"His ankle is still sore," Vault said. "We may be able to play him on defense only. He moved in at running back when Ken got hurt, so Ken will take his spot. We've got four or five backs who do a good job of running the football."
Delhi Charter moved down to the Block 5-yard line with nine seconds remaining. But after a penalty and two incompletions, Jamal Macklin batted down a Will Zeigler pass and the Bears took their 14-6 lead into the dressing room.
Block led 14-6 at halftime, but got the ball back when William Cummings recovered a short sky kick that Delhi let bounce at the Gator 47-yard line.
"We just had a mental lapse," said Delhi Charter coach Brett Raley.
"We practice special teams before every practice," Benny Vault said. "I've coached long enough to know how big special teams can be."
Mario Bowman, who finished with 103 yards on nine carries, went 33 yards for the score to take advantage of the turnover.
DCS answered as Colvin scored on a 1-yard run and ran in the conversion.
DCS kicked the ball out of bounds on their first three kicks to give Block the ball at its own 35.
But leading 21-14, DCS kicked the ball to Ty'quentin Bell, who caught it at his 10-yard line and returned it to the DCS 28.
'"I knew I had to stay focused," Bell said. "I was just waiting my time. I saw grass and open field and got some good blocks."
Colbert scored from 20 yards out and added the kick for a 28-14 Bear lead.
Block led 28-22 when Ken Colbert went 45 yards, breaking five tackles to put the Bears up 35-22 after his extra point kick.
"I told Ken we needed a touchdown and we needed him big on that play," Benny Vault said. "He came through."
"I knew we needed a big play," Colbert said. "I knew I had to get in the end zone. The offensive line did a great job blocking. for me."
But the Gators would not go away, as Zeigler hit Damarius Brass on a 62-yard scoring play to bring the Gators to within 35-28 with 11:40 remaining.
DCS got the ball back before Vault made the defensive play of the night.
Delhi Charter finished 4-7..
"We've gotten a lot better through the year," Raley said. "Our record does not indicate how well this team has played. We've gotten better each week and we played some tough competition. Block just had too much speed for us and we ran out of time. I want to wish Block the best of luck. Coach Vault does a great job with them and they have some outstanding athletes."
Westminster is 9-2, having defeated Ascension Catholic 42-12 in their first-round contest.
"They are very big and have a few athletes," Vault said. "They also have playoff experience. We have to come out and play a total game Friday." |
