Block season ends
Westminster Christian head football coach Tommy Badon coached track at Louisiana-Lafayette.
His Crusader football team held at track meet at Block High Friday, defeating the Bears 36-6 in a Class 2A regional contest to end the Bears season at 9-3.
The Crusaders, totaled 486 yards, running 63 plays.
"We've run 70 plays three times this year and we've averaging 400 yards a game and 40 points a game," Badon said. "Our offense is very up-tempo. We call everything on the ball. There are not many high school teams that call plays at the line of scrimmage. Block had a lot of guys going both ways, so I think we wore them down."
Westminster scored on the final play of the first half on a 2-yard run by Josh Mouton with two seconds remaining on fourth-and goal to go up 24-6 at halftime.
The Crusaders dominated the second half, holding Block to 86 total yards.
"Our youth showed up," said Block coach Benny Vault. "They run their offense well. They overwhelmed us. But we'll be back. I'm only losing five seniors. I think we overachieved tonight."
Westminster improved to 10-2. The Crusaders lost to Pointe Coupee Central 37-35 in the rain for finish second in district.
"Our offense keeps people off balance," Badon said. "Our quarterback (Luke Judie, who was 5-of-14 for 62 yards, missing on seven of his first eight passes) was nervous early, but he settled down. Our offense is hard to stop if we play like we are capable of playing."
Westminster scored first on a 22-yard field goal by Tyler Louviere.
Block answered on its first play from scrimmage after the TD as Mario Bowman went right up the middle for 80 yards and a score. The point-after kick was blocked, leaving Block with a 6-3 lead.
Block lineman Emmett Burton injured his knee with 3:20 remaining in the second quarter and limped through the rest of the game. Two other Block linemen limped off the field.
"They were chop-blocking," Vault said, although the Crusaders were never called for it. "That slowed us down a lot."
An interception by Westminster's Skyler Sonnier at the Block 35 led to a 14-yard TD run by Donyell Young, who led the Crusaders with 84 rushing yards.
Westminster went up 17-6 on an an 8-yard run by Jalen Williams with 2:24 remaining.
A short punt gave the Crusaders the ball at the Block 44 with 1:41 remaining.
Mouton's score put Westminster up by 18 and the second half was owned by the Crusaders as Judice scored on TD runs of 8 and 39 yards.
The 39-yarder came after Winchester held Block on fourth-and-two.
William Cummings led Block with 103 yards rushing, while Bowman added 101.
