Monterey hosting tournament

The Monterey High School Basketball Tournament tips off Thursday as LaSalle, Harrisonburg, Block, Jena, Delhi Charter, Northwood and Cathedral join the host teams.

"The main thing is to get some games in and make some money," said Monterey boys coach Eric Richard. "I hope we can draw some big crowds. We've got schools of all sizes and it's going to be a challenge to get to the championship game."

Monterey high's boys and girls came up just short of winning their own tournament last year as the Monterey boys fell to Cathedral 51-36 in the finals, while the Lady Wolves were beaten by Delhi Charter.

Tournament play begins Wednesday at 4 p.m. as Northwood's girls face Delhi Charter.

Northwood and Delhi Charter's boys follow that game.

At 6:40 p.m., Jena's girls face Block, followed by Jena versus Block boys.

Play tips off Thursday at 4 p.m. with LaSalle's girls taking on Harrisonburg. At 5:20 p.m., Cathedral's boys meet LaSalle.

Monterey's boys take on Harrisonburg at 6:40 p.m., followed by Monterey and Cathedral's girls teams.

Action begins Friday at 4 p.m. with girls action, with the final game slated for 8 p.m.

The girls championship game will be played Saturday at noon, followed by the boys championship game at 1:30 p.m.

"We're just looking to improve and continue on what we've been doing," Richard said. "I consider this the second of three seasons. This will take us to the Christmas break. We've had some kids step in and step up when other kids haven't been able to play and we want to continue to see everybody contribute."
