Brooks leads All-Metro
When Ferriday quarterback Shannon Morales was lost for the season in the opener against Natchez and running back/linebacker Dontrell Domino was lost for the year with a knee injury in the second game, Trojan senior running back Jarvis Brooks knew his demand would be greater.
"I really didn't look at it as having to step up more and having more pressure because I try to play my best every game," Brooks said. "I just knew I had to keep doing what I was doing. I did feel like it was up to me to hold the team up. But I knew they were already counting on me."
Brooks finished the season 903 rushing yards on 78 carries, scoring seven touchdowns. The Trojans finished the season at 2-8.
"It should have been better, but injuries hit us hard," Brooks said.
The Ferriday senior knows the history of outstanding running backs at Ferriday.
"I wanted to be the top back ever since I was a freshman," Brooks said. "I just kept playing to the best of my ability."
Brooks said his 5-foot-3, 165-pound frame was never a detriment.
"It never bothered me and I never felt I had to prove something because people knew what I could do," he said. "I just went out there looking to make big plays and score touchdowns."
Brooks also handled the kicking duties for the team,. kicking several extra points and connecting on a 30-yard field goal.
"We were already counting on Jarvis quite a bit," said Ferriday head coach Cleothis Cummings. "We expected him to be a big part of our offense. It may have given him more incentive. I think under the circumstances he did a really good job."
Brooks said he is hoping to play college football and has been contacted by Louisiana College.
"If I have to walk on somewhere, I will work hard to get a scholarship," he said.
Brooks said he will miss Ferriday.
"I'll miss my teammates, teachers and all the true Trojan fans," he said.
While it was not a successful season on the gridiron, with Ferriday winning two games and Vidalia posting one win, there were still solid performances by Viking and Trojan players..
Joining Brooks in the all-parish backfield are Trojan freshman quarterback Ronald Davis, junior back Stewart Mallory, Trojan junior Jaylen Neal and Vidalia freshman Jonterris Townsend.
Mallory, subbing for injured Michael Whitley most of the year, rushed for 132 yards, passed for 439 and also caught five passes for 114 yards.
Neal rushed for 287 yards, while Townsend rushed for 589 yards in his first season.
Vidalia junior Stewart Mallory is Athlete after playing quarterback, running back and receiver.
Mallory rushed for 132 yards and passed for 279 more.
The offensive line consists of Vidalia senior Chris Temple. Viking junior JoJo Vinson, Ferriday senior Jalen Hayes, Trojan freshman Marquis Brown and Ferriday senior Trei Parker.
Wide receivers are Vidalia senior Zalon Parker, Ferriday sophomore Adrian Wiggins and Ferriday sophomore Allen Cummings.
Parker caught seven passes for 172 yards. Wiggins caught 21 passes for 532 yards and four touchdowns, while Cummings had 16 catches for 188 yards.
The defensive line consists of Vidalia senior Dantrell Saul, Ferriday sophomore defensive end Marlon Jackson, Trojan freshman Marquis Brown and Vidalia junior Dillon Gautreau.
Jackson had 17 tackles, five sacks, a forced fumble and interception.
Brown totaled eight tackles, two sacks and an interception.
Gautreau had 16 solo tackles and 14 assists and also averaged 31.4 yards on his punts, which a longest of 51 yards.
Saul had 59 tackles, 29 of which were solo stops.
Linebackers are Vidalia junior Sean Gatlin, Trojan senior Zamarion Rosenthal and Ferriday junior Karl Hall.
Gatlin had 29 solo tackles and 30 assists for 59 tackles.
Karl Hall had 54 tackles and one forced fumble.
Rosenthal finished with 78 tackles and four interceptions.
Defensive backs are Ferriday sophomore Trey Hall, Ferriday senior Shonderrious Collier, Ferriday sophomore J'Veion Hardaway and Vidalia senior Trashone Mays.
Hall had 62 tackles, two interceptions and a touchdown.
Mays had 17 solo tackles and added 14 assists.
Collier had 19 tackles and one interception.
Hardaway finished with 21 tackles, on blocked punt for a touchdown and two pass deflections. |
