'Tis the season to celebrate the impossible

The wise man Solomon wrote; "to everything there is a season and a time to every purpose." We are, once again, in that rarefied atmosphere of the season of Christmas. That time of "special- ness" that captivates our hearts and minds.
But beyond that, there is a sense in our nation and yes, even in our world, that perhaps there is a new season that has come to the hearts of humankind. Sadly, this new season is not one of great hope and optimism. Now, before you stop reading this, thinking it just another voice of negativism in an already too negative culture, please hear me out.
One of the greatest concepts of Christmas is one that is often over-looked. When the angel of God visited Mary with the news of the coming Christ Child,
Mary's incredulity overtook her. She responded that this was impossible, but the angel's insight into the heavenly order of things prompted this response: "with God nothing shall be impossible".
Jesus came into a world full of seemingly insurmountable problems. Corruption in government, traditional religion in decline, morality under assault-but He came anyway. In fact, just when society and culture was so full of difficulties and problems was His chosen and appointed time.
Emmanuel-God with us? Impossible!
A virgin peasant girl having a child? Impossible!
God robing Himself in flesh and being one of us? Impossible!
These unlikelihoods set the stage for the miraculous and impossible to happen. And when it did, angels formed a choir, everyday shepherds suspended their duties and kings came from afar. We cannot and must not separate the miraculous and "impossible" from the season. Instead we should celebrate it. God is still with us. 'Tis the season to celebrate the impossible.
