Road, bridge projects in the works

Bids for road and bridge projects totaling more than an estimated $65 million will be let for work in Concordia and Catahoula parishes this year, according Ricky Moon, Chase District Administrator for the Louisiana Department of Transportation & Development.

Projects include the new Ouachita River Bridge and connecting road at Harrisonburg, which will cost an estimated $50 million, and construction of two right turning lanes at the Hwy. 84/U.S. 425 intersection in Ferriday.

Estimated costs for the six projects scheduled for Concordia total $7.2 million while the projects in Catahoula will cost an estimated $56 million, including the bridge project at Harrisonburg.

Moon said a bid letting for the Ferriday project is slated for December. Estimated cost for the work is $500,000. The project will include construction of two right turning lanes -- one along the southbound lane of Hwy. 425 and the other along the eastbound lane of Hwy. 84.

"The work will include an improved radius on the corners for turning," Moon said.

Other Concordia projects include:

-- Matching overlay and asphalt service treatment for sections of La. 129, La. 908. La. 907 and La. 3203 totaling 14 miles. Estimated cost: $2.7 million.

-- Matching overlay and asphalt service treatment for La. 15 from La. Hwy. 565 at Deer Park northward for 8.5 miles. The project will cost an estimated $2.6 million.

-- Microsurfacing of 8.5 miles of La. 565 between Monterey and Deer Park. Estimated cost is $900,000.

-- Replacement of bridge on John Williamson Road in Ridgecrest area at an estimated cost of $500,000.

In Catahoula, the Ouachita River Bridge project will be let in the summer. Construction may take two to three years, Moon said.

The new bridge will be located downstream from the existing bridge and will cross the river at an angle. Moon said the new road connecting to the bridge on the west side of the Ouachita "will come out at the intersection of La. 8 and La. 124 near the DOTD maintenance unit" at Harrisonburg.

Other bid letting scheduled in Catahoula this summer include:

-- Four-mile section of La. 124 from Enterprise toward Harrisonburg involving patch overlay at an estimated cost of $1.9 million.

-- Sections of La. 124 and La. 3264 between Larto and Jonesville totaling 20 miles. The work will include asphalt surface treatment at an estimated cost of $6.5 million.

-- La. 8 realignment near a wash out along the Ouachita totaling 1.3 miles.

-- Realignment of La. 124 at Enterprise near Duty Ferry due to a wash out on the Ouachita. The project will cost an estimated $600,000.

-- Patching overlay along La. 3102 at Larto totaling four miles. Estimated cost is $2 million.
