Copeland in Hall of Fame
Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland remembers going with this grandfather when he was 10 years old to check out election results in a local race.
He also remembers candidates standing in the back of pick-up trucks, delivering speeches to garner votes for a political positions.
Those memories came flooding back Saturday when Copeland was inducted into the Louisiana Political Hall of Fame in Winnfield.
"I am just elated and thankful to the Hall of Fame committee for their support," Copeland said. "I was in total awe of this event and the people I was inducted with. It's a tremendous honor."
Also inducted were the late Sen. Charles Barham of Lincoln Parish; former Grant Parish Sheriff L.R. "Pop" Hataway; former Bossier City Mayor George Dement; Angelo Roppolo, a behind-the-scenes political icon from Shreveport-Bossier; Raymond Strother, who is said to have "invented" the position of political consultant; and members of the Chabert family.
Copeland joined previous parish inductees Al Ater and James "Jim" Brown, both former legislators who also held statewide offices, and the late Concordia Sentinel publisher Sam Hanna Sr.
Copeland is in his sixth term as mayor of Vidalia and served three terms as an alderman for the city.
"This award is something that never would have been possible without the support of the people of Vidalia, City of Vidalia employees, local legislative leaders through the years and a number of friends," Copeland said.
