Viking baseball counting on youth Vidalia High baseball coach Kale Davis has two seniors on his baseball team this season.
But inexperience is not an issue.
"We've got some guys who have been playing together for a while," Davis sai
The Vikings finished last year at 12-14 and No. 37 in the Class 3A power rankings.
"We're not using that as motivation as much as being a learning experience that every game counts," Davis said.
Vidalia had to cancel its own jamboree last week, but played in the Franklin Parish Jamboree on Saturday in Winnsboro.
The Vikings beat Franklin Parish 1-0 in three innings as sophomore William Handjis kept the Patriots without a run.
Vidalia lost to Caldwell 5-1 in the second game in Winnsboro.
"I was pretty pleased with the play," Davis said. "We made some mistakes in the second game. Our pitching is so far ahead of everything else."
Joining Handjis on the mound are senior Roper Craft, junior Josh Foucher, sophomore Alan Doyle, senior Wiliam Anderson and freshman Cole Cangemi. Others who will be counted on and pitching in junior varsity games are freshman Dylan Parnham, freshman Chandler Grayson and freshman Jacob Wilkinson.
"We've got a lot of young arms," Davis said.
Foucher batted .369, scoring 22 runs.
Junior Kyle Coley is handling the catching duties.
The infield includes senior first baseman Nate Thomas, senior third baseball Garrett Rhemes and Craft at shortstop.
"Second base is still a work in progress," Davis said.
Foucher and Cangemi have been rotating at second base.
Craft batted .408 with 29 runs, 23 RBIs. Craft also hit two grand slams.
The outfield includes senior Stewart Malllory in center field, sophomore Tyler Sandifer in left field and sophomores Dakota Hunt and Torrey Smith rotating in right field.
"We've still got a lot of work to do, but we're going to get there," Davis said. |
