Sicily Island boys make history

Sicily Island's boys basketball team became the first ever team to advance to the state semifinals as the Tigers defeated Dubach 71-68 in Class C quarterfinal play at Dubach Tuesday.

"This is very exciting," said Sicily Island coach Curtis Shavers. "Dubach has a real scrappy team. I can see how they beat a No. 12 seed and No. 5 seed. They are especially hard to beat on their home court."

Sicily Island, seeded No. 4, faces No. 1 Atlanta Saturday at 1 p.m. in Bossier City in a semifinal contest.

Third-rated New Living Word, which is coached by former Ferriday High football coach Jerry Baldwin, faces No. 2 Pelican in the other semifinal contest.

Dubach, which was seeded No. 21, defeated Elizabeth and Northside Christian to reach the quarterfinals.

The Hornets hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer at halftime to take the lead at intermission.

"We had a couple of runs in the second half and built a 10-point lead," Shavers said. "They came back and we had some turnovers and missed some free throws. They did not miss a free throw in the fourth quarter."

Desirae Drumgoole led Sicily Island with 23 points, while Javantae Smith added 16.

Tensas Parish's girls came up a game shot of getting back to the state tournament, falling to Central Catholic 59-43 Monday night in quarterfinal action inMorgan City.

Block's boys fell to Delhi 80-50 Friday night.
