Parish schools continue drills
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Huntington School is getting in final preparations before competing in the Copiah Jamboree in Gallman, Ms. Thursday.

Huntington will face River Oaks at 5 p.m. before taking on Newton Academy at 7:30 p.m.

Huntington scrimmaged Tensas Friday.

"I thought we got out of it what we wanted," Harkins said. "Our linemen showed a lot of grit. We haven't really been able to tell how good our line will be because of a lot of young guys."

Harkins was still moving players around this week.

"We've got a lot of new kids this year," he said. "Most of them have played, but not together. Kevin Brown is the only player here I have had for three years. We lost 13 seniors from last year and most of them played together since junior high."

Ferriday High put on the pads today.

Freddie Harrison welcomed his largest squad since taking over two years ago.

"We've got about 46 kids, with a freshmen group of 20," Harrison said. "But a lot of them are battle-tested. I'm excited to be out here again. I was not real satisfied with going 5-5 last year. But we had a heckuva workout program over the summer. We had good turnout and the kids got bigger, faster and stronger."

Ferriday will host Jackson High School in a scrimmage on August 21.

"They will test our run defense and we'll find out a lot about ourselves," Harrison said.

Vidalia High will host district rival Buckeye on Aug. 21 in a scrimmage.

Dee Faircloth welcomed 60 players for his 41st year as head coach.

Huntington opens its season at home on Aug. 28 against Central Private.

Ferriday hosts a jamboree that night, while Vidalia will host its annual jamboree on Aug. 29.
