Brown finally gets his due
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
How many times have we seen football officials spend several minutes looking over a replay before finally coming to a conclusion with the announcers saying, "The most important thing is they get it right?"

Well, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame finally got it right.

Twenty years after being inducted into the Ole Miss Hall of Fame, Allen Brown was selected to be inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.

What in the world have you guys been looking at?

The guy was a two-time All-SEC selection, was a member of the Sophomore All-SEC team, played in the 1965 Senior Bowl, Blue-Gray Game and 1965 Chicago All-Star Game against the Cleveland Browns and was drafted in the third round by the Green Bay Packers of the NFL and the San Diego Chargers of the AFL.

The 66-year-old Brown owns two Super Bowl rings and also selected to represent Ole Miss as an SEC Legend in 2004 at the SEC Championship Game. He was also co-captain of the 1964 Rebel football team.

I made a phone call to Michael Rubenstein a few years ago asking about the process the committee uses to make its selections.

He did a commendable job trying to explain it, but I was still confused.

And I am not being critical of Michael, because he has done so much for the state as far as honoring its sports legends. He was just following procedure and his hands were basically tied.

All anyone has to do is look at Brown's career at Ole Miss and in the NFL, even though it was cut way too short by a hit in the back that injured his spleen.

But there is so much more to Allen Brown. He is a leader in his community, a big part of the Miss-Lou Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame, served on the Lake St. John Advisory Committee and is just an all-around class individual.

And forget about him holding a grudge about not being selected until 40-plus years after his NFL career ended.

Allen Brown will accept this award the same way he played - with dignity and class and a ton of humbleness.

The ceremonies will be held July 30-31, 2010 in Jackson.

"That is quite an honor," Brown said. "It's unbelievable they would select me with the other guys out there."

What's unbelievable to a lot of people is the fact it took this long for Brown to be selected to the state Hall of Fame. Brown was inducted into the Ole Miss Hall of Fame in 1989 and is a great ambassador for the Oxford school.

Congratulations, Allen Brown. They finally got it right.
