Block season ends Block High's anticipated re-match with South Plaquemines will not happen this season as the Bears fell to West St. John 21-13 in Jonesville Friday in a Clas A Regional contest.
"We turned the ball over four times in the red zone and you just can't put the ball on the ground and expect to win," said Block coach Benny Vault. "But the kids played hard. We just made too many mistakes at the most inopportune times.
Block scored on its opening drive as the Bears marched down the field 83 yards in nine plays with Cudarius Johnson tossing a 23-yard touchdown pass to Vashawn Davis.
The conversion kick failed.
Following a Bear fumble, West St. John got on the board with a 41-yard pass play from Kenneth Dabney to Daylon Feist.
Brandon Jones added the kick.
Block took the halftime lead on an 80-yard drive which ended with Preston Bowman going in from three yards out. Travis Barber added the kick.
West St. John took a 14-13 lead on its first possession of the second half as Dabney scored on a 1-yard run following a 54-yard pass to the Bear 12-yard line.
A fumble into the end zone turned the ball over for the Bears, who were unable to threaten again.
West St. John closed out the scoring as Dabney scored on a 44 yard touchdown pass with 10:09 to play in the game.
Bowman ran for 187 yards on 24 yards and scored a touchdown.
"We had some juniors step up and we've got some young players returning who will contribute next year," Vault said. "We just have to reload and get ready again." |
