Gilley performs Sunday; Edwards to attend

Former Ferriday resident Mickey Gilley returns with his Branson show to Concordia Parish this weekend for two performances Sunday at the convention center in Vidalia.

Gilley's shows are slated at 2 p.m. and at 6 p.m. He will be joined by his Urban Cowboy Band and Joe Riley.

Gilley's performed before sold out shows in Vidalia last year.

In attendance for the second show this year will be former Gov. Edwin Edwards, who will hold a book signing from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Jim Bowie Room at the convention center in Vidalia. Both Edwards and Leo Honeycutt, author of "Edwin Edwards: Louisiana Governor," will take part.

Edwards, 84, served a 10-year federal prison sentence for racketeering, but has returned to public life since his release earlier this year. He has remarried and has been traveling the state signing books.

He served four terms as governor.

Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland said Gilley, who was injured in a fall two years ago, is more mobile this year.

"He has movement in his legs, he's walking better," Copeland said, "but he still can't use his hands to play the piano. His singing is still strong though and it's going to be another great show."

Gilley, 75, lives in Branson, Mo. His two sold out shows last year resulted in the sale of 1,400 tickets.
