GOP strife embarrasses state

The state Republican Party convention held in Shreveport earlier this month proved once again that Louisiana politics can get messy from time to time.

It can be hazardous to your health, too.

Just ask Henry Herford of Delhi.

Herford was a delegate at the state GOP convention. It was convened to select delegates for the Republican National Convention scheduled for late August in Tampa, Fla.

Though former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is the likely Republican nominee for president, support for Texas Congressman Ron Paul remains strong among Republicans who are at odds with the state and national party establishments. As you recall, the Libertarian-minded Paul waged a spirited but unsuccessful campaign for the Republican nomination. Paul suspended his presidential campaign weeks ago when it became clear that Romney would secure the GOP nomination.
